The European Union, along with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) recently agreed to ramp up support for the water utility sector in Bulgaria. This came in the form of unfunded guarantees of up to €40 million offered to Raiffeisenbank. According to the agreement, the funds will be used to back loans to regional wastewater and water operators.
Further details indicate that the loans extended by Bulgaria’s Raiffeisenbank will finance the improvement of existing infrastructure, the upgrade of potable and wastewater treatment plants, and the construction of new water supply / sewage networks all over the country. Both companies pledged amounts of €20 million, which will be provided via the Fund Manager of Financial Instruments in Bulgaria.
