Serbia and North Macedonia Commit to High-Speed Rail Link
Serbia and North Macedonia have entered into a memorandum of cooperation to establish a high-speed rail connection linking the Serbian city of Nis with North Macedonia's capital. This agreement, witnessed by the Serbian and North Macedonian prime ministers, was formalized by Blagoj Bochvarsi, North Macedonia's Minister of Transport and Communications, and Goran Vesić, Serbia's Minister of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure.
The proposed rail line is a segment of the ambitious Corridor X project, which aims to create a transportation link from Athens through several major cities including Thessaloniki, Skopje, Nis, Belgrade, Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Salzburg. According to North Macedonia's Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski, this development is expected to significantly boost both transportation infrastructure and economic cooperation among the participating nations.
Initially, the project will concentrate on a 50km stretch from Skopje to Nis and Belgrade, with an extension planned to connect Skopje to its International Airport.
Both governments are set to establish a working group to devise a detailed action plan for this project in the upcoming weeks. Additionally, they have approached the European Union for financial support to advance this rail initiative, as per a statement from the Serbian government.
