The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has helped finance a waste-to-energy project in the Serbian capital of Belgrade in Vinča . This ground breaking project will cost €370 million euros with the EBRD contributing €128.25 million euros and when the waste to energy project is competed then it will provide the local population of 1.7 million in the capital with a modern green waste management system.
Currently Belgrade has a major waste disposal problem, in fact the Serbia capital has the dubious honour of having Europe’s largest unmanaged landfill waste dump holding 10 million tonnes of waste after 40 years of operation. The new waste-to-energy facilities will replace this site and go along way in fixing a major issue with waste management in Serbia, Construction of the new facilities started in October 2019 and continued throughout the recent public health measures in Serbia.
